Ready to coordinate some footwork and palmas?
Here’s an exercise to work on that in the compás of 8.
This one is also good for practicing beginning on the same foot you end on, which can be challenging as you build speed.
If coordinating palmas and movement is new to you, I recommend following these steps:
1️⃣ Learn the footwork pattern.
2️⃣ When you’ve got that down, bring your speed way down, and add palmas on the primary counts only (1, 3, 5, 7).
2️⃣ Next add more palmas, so you’re clapping on every beat.
The steps and counts:
𝟭 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦 (stomp)
& left 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯 (heel)
𝟮 right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
& left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟯 right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
& left 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟰 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
& left 𝘵𝘢ló𝘯 (heel made by lifting leg from behind)
𝟱 right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟲 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟳 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟴 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟭 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
& right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟮 left 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
& right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟯 left 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
& right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟰 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
& right 𝘵𝘢ló𝘯
𝟱 left 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟲 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟳 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟴 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟭 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
& left 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟮 right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
& left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟯 right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
& left 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟰 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
& left 𝘵𝘢ló𝘯
𝟱 right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟲 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟳 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟴 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟭 right 𝘵𝘢ló𝘯
𝟮 left 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟯 right 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟰 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦
𝟱 left 𝘵𝘢ló𝘯
𝟲 right 𝘵𝘢𝘤ó𝘯
𝟳 left 𝘨𝘰𝘭𝘱𝘦

REPEAT the full exercise starting on the left.
Now tell me,
How’s your palmas/footwork coordination on a scale of 1-10?
