Fancy up a basic flamenco marcaje with this simple but pretty abanico movement.
Below I show it to you in the 12-count compás, but you could adapt it to any rhythm.
Take a peek at this tutorial video then see the notes to follow for additional support:
The step:
Mark forward and back alternating feet.
The abanico & arm movements:
Hold the fan open with your right hand.
Support the round edge with your left hand.
(You will keep your hands in these positions throughout the movement.)
Move the abanico in a full circle in front of you:
1️⃣. Keeping your elbows up, raise the abanico up to the right making sure it faces the front (and is visible to the audience).
2️⃣. Flip it over your head (so that the abanico is parallel with the floor).
3️⃣. Flip the fan again to face front (the audience) as you bring it back down on your left side.
4️⃣. Repeat.
A note:
Pay attention to your shoulders, keeping them down as you move the fan.
Want to add some challenge?
Do the same thing to the other side.
(You could do this holding the fan with your left hand or keeping it in the right hand.)
You could even alternate sides with each foot.
Play, and have fun!
Let me know how it goes in the comments below.
