Caña
Hasta las personas reales
viene la muerte y se lleva
Y conmigo no ha podido
cuando la llamo de veras
Here’s a video of María Rosa dancing siguiriyas con castañuelas at Corral de la Morería in 1964 and one of the letras she dances to.
Baladilla de los tres puñales
Rafael de León
He comprado tres puñales
para que me des la muerte...
El primero, indiferencia,
sonrisa que va y que viene
y que se adentra en la carne
como una rosa de nieve.
You've heard many examples of different artists singing cuplés in the previous four posts. Now it's time to see how one dances to a cuplé, and I've got one of the best possible examples for you, Carmen Herrera. Following the video I'll talk about how to dance bulerías to a cuplé then share one of the songs you'll hear and its translation
Today find a peteneras letra and a video of Mercedes Ruíz interpreting it.
Petenera
Yo no creo ni en mi madre
Aunque de mí hable la gente
Que todo en este mundo es mentira
Madre de mi corazón
No hay más verdad que la muerte
No hay quién me lo contradiga
Soleá apolá
Todo el mundo le pide a Dios
la salud y la libertad
y yo le pido la muerte
no me la quiere mandar
The whole world asks God
for health and freedom
And I ask for death
He doesn't want to send it to me
As I mentioned last week, we've been studying caña here in Jerez on the Flamenco Tour (along with bulerías por su puesto). We learned from Mercedes that la caña has six ays (iis) while el polo has five.
For baile, that is.
And there is a set of ays in the middle of the letra and at the end.
For cante, it's more open.
Malagueña de Chacón
Voy a dejar tu querer
por el hablar de la gente
pero ten por entendido
que me va a costar la muerte
el haberte conocido
I'm going to stop loving you
because of what people say
but understand
that having known you
is going to cost me my life
This morning in class we were talking about tonight's show at the Villamarta, the Homenaje a la Chaty.
Somebody asked Mercedes what she would be dancing in the show. They were hoping it would be alegrías since that's what we're learning from her in the workshop.
"Let's see if Laura can guess what I'm going to dance..."
Here's a video of Jesús Mendez from that show we saw the final night of the Spain Tour. Go to 10:15 to hear today's letra and to see Jesús's mother-in-law sing it. Watch her.
Watch it all. You'll see lots of good stuff. Like Perico playing cajón and palmas.

Que cosita más sensible
es pelear con la muerte
