Here’s a video of Zorri singing bulerías at Peña la Bulería in Jerez, a letra, followed by an activity for you to strengthen your rhythm and listening skills!

Mira si yo a ti te quiero
porque tú te llamas Rosa
me he metido a jardinero.

Look, I do love you so
Because your name is Rose
I became a gardener.

Listen to Zorri sing this in the video below.

He sings this one at the end. (He cracks himself up every time he sings it.)

An Activity for You

OBJECTIVE: To become familiar with cante por bulerías and to strengthen compás.

Observe:

Watch the video and notice how they are playing palmas, and listen for the basic rhythm.

Pay attention to how the palmas change at the end of each letra, at the caída.

Note: Zorri sings three full letras, each in a very similar way. He repeats the first line in each letra. (With this first letra, he sings the first line three times.) And in each, he sings the second part, the last two lines, just one time.

Practice:

Play the video again.

Follow along with palmas. (Try one of the patterns you see the guys doing in the video.)

When you hear a caída, change your palmas. (For example, you can play four strong palmas on 7. 8, 9. 10 or you could play the contratiempo to those beats.)

Reflect:

How did it feel?
