Is This Dancer Respecting the Cante? | The Weekly Letra

Can you name one thing a dancer can do that shows they’re in tune with the singer?

Think about it then scroll down.

In the video below Carmen Herrera demonstrates how to dance respecting the cante in our class with José Mijita on the last Flamenco Tour to Jerez.

We studied a few letras with José. ⁣⁣⁣

He showed us how to sing them and explained different ways a singer may interpret the same letra.⁣⁣

He also talked about the origins of certain letras and the differences between various types and different styles of bulerías in Jerez.

Carmen showed us what to do in our dancing and palmas to reflect the cante. ⁣⁣⁣

You can see what to do below, but first,

Here is the letra José sings:⁣⁣

From: De La Parra Sale El Vino
Pepe del Morao

De la parra sale el vino
y de las evitas maduras
son los besos de tu boca
que me llevan a la locura

Wine comes from the vine
and from the ripe grapes
It’s the kisses from your mouth
that drive me wild

You can find the full song on their album, Albariza, which you will love.❤️

Now, here’s that video:

If we watch carefully we can see Carmen is paying attention to what José sings and responding accordingly.

Do you see how she’s noticeably listening to him as she dances?

Do you see how she resolves when he does?

Do you see how she’s not stomping loudly over his voice?

What else do you notice?

Do You Want to Learn from Them?

Join me from wherever you are in the world for a virtual workshop with José and Carmen Herrera to learn about cante por bulerías and how to respond to it with palmas and baile. You won’t want to miss it!⁣⁣⁣⁣⁣
