How to Use Bulerías to Strengthen Your Trust

Today in Part Two of the Trust & Flamenco Series I share with you how I use bulerías to strengthen my intuition. It's actually not all that difficult.

Because bulerías invites me to trust.

To trust me.

I don't always accept the invitation, but when I do bulerías becomes my teacher.

It teaches me to listen to and honor that instinct that talks to me. To follow it instead of questioning it. Questioning it gets me into trouble, I tend to question, but following it leads me to good and truth.

Trust is something I’ve been working on for quite some time.

And I’m not talking about trusting others,

I’m talking about trusting myself

… which can be hard.

Bulerías coaxes me into trusting, over and over again. Each opportunity to dance offers another opportunity to practice trusting.

Doing bulerias is one of the best ways to strengthen the trust muscle

Because the body and mind work together to do so.

We get to experience what it feels like to trust. We get to experience what it feels like not to.

On a physical level, on a mental level, on an emotional level.

We get to experience it and learn from it. We can notice how it feels to go with the gut and become accustomed to the feeling. The more familiarity we gain with this feeling, the more we are able to tap into it, to trust it, and to follow it.

When we dance bulerías we receive immediate bodily evidence of the results of trusting and the results of failing to do so. (Failing to trust often results in a mistake or a missed opportunity. I’ll talk about this in an upcoming post.)

So let's get down to it,

How to Use Bulerías to Strengthen Your Intuition

1. Do it.

Seriously. Take the opportunities. Get out there even if you don't feel 'ready.' (Class is a very good and safe place for this.)

So, please, dance bulerías!

2. Ask yourself 'what does it feel like' questions.

What does it feel like to do a move you feel very comfortable with? What does it feel like to do a trickier move? What does it feel like to dance to a letra you know well? What does it feel like to dance to a letra you don't know? What does it feel like to dance in class with your friends? What does it feel like to dance with people you don't know? What does it feel like to dance at a show?

You get the idea.

Which leads us to...

3. Notice what happens in your dancing when you trust & pay attention to how that feels.

Does it feel easy? Does it feel hard? Does it feel good? Does it feel bad? Does it feel scary? Does it feel safe? Do things go well? Do you follow a plan? Or do you do things you'd not intended to?

If it's hard to tell whether or not you were trusting at a given moment, sometimes it's hard to tell, you might ask the above questions in relation to a specific moment of your dance instead. This can help identify when you're trusting and when you're not.

4. Notice what happens in your dancing when you don't trust & pay attention to how that feels.

Follow the above protocol.

Basically,

We can use bulerías to strengthen intuition by dancing and practicing and noticing how what we're doing feels.

This is not an overnight practice.

Like any muscle strengthening activity, it requires time and repetition. The good news about that is that it's fun to do.

So, I invite you to try it out, and let me know how it goes.

What do you think?

Did you give this a try? What did you notice? Can you identify when you're trusting and when you're not? Do you feel scared? Do you feel safe? Can strengthening your trust while dancing bulerías strengthen your trust while engaging in other activities in your daily life? Let me know in the comments.
