It's Never Too Late to do What You Want to do - Mercedes Ruíz | The Second Series: Part 2
In the previous interview we heard about Mercedes's favorite dancers of today and about how she interprets the cante. Today more of you're questions answered and some thoughts for students of all levels.
For those of us who began dancing as adults
Para empezar, something of interest to students like me, who were not born in Spain and who didn't begin dancing until we were adults...
Tú has empezado con cuatro años, muy joven. Hay mucha gente de otros paises que han empezando de adulto por no conocer al flamenco o por varias razónes. ¿Qué dices tú a esa gente?No pasa nada. No nunca es tarde para hacer lo que uno quiere hacer. Yo empecé con cuatro años porque yo tuve la suerte de nacer en Jerez y porque mi madre me llevó a una acadaemia de flamenco, no? El arte es arte y hay gente que lo descubre antes y hay gente que lo descubre después. Pero no pasa absolutemente nada. Hombre, si me dice alguien con 30 años que quiere ser profesional pues un poco más complicado, no? Pero si quiere aprender para dar clases. Todo es dedicación y las ganas y el tiempo que tú quieres poner a cada cosa y si se la pone por lo menos para sentirte bien o para hacerlo correcto, cualquira lo puede hacer, sabes? Bueno, cualquiera que tenga cualidades. Mi madre no puede bailar por ejemplo. Cualquiera que tenga cualidades, que tenga oido, bueno que le guste el flamenco, que sea aficionada al flamenco más que nada.
You started when you were four years old, really young. There are a lot of people from other countries who started dancing as adults because they didn’t know what flamenco was or for other reasons. What do you say to these people? No big deal. It’s never too late to do what you want to do. I started when I was four because I was lucky enough to have been born in Jerez and because my mom took me to a flamenco academy. Art is art, and there are people who discover it earlier, and there are people who discover it later. But it’s no big deal. Well, if someone who is thirty and wants to dance professionally, this is a bit more complicated, you know? But if they want to learn and take classes. It’s all about dedication and interest and the time that you want to give to each thing, and if you do it at least to feel good or to do it correctly anyone can do it, you know? Well, anyone who has some natural ability. My mother can’t dance for example. Whoever has some abilities, an ear, and who before anything likes flamenco.
Relating
The other night at the Teatro Villamarta watching Mercedes perform I saw all of these body moves we’ve supposedly been doing in class and couldn’t understand how I could ever do them any justice. I still don’t know. But I’m not ready to give up yet. In her class and I go in and out of feeling beautiful and feeling like a gigantic mess. And so I wonder...
¿Tú siendo muy profesional, como relacionas a nosotras que no somos asi de dedicadas? Como en tu clase tienes gente de todo y tú te relacionas bien con todas. ¿Cómo? Como la gente que realmente quiere dedicar y la gente que lo hace de hobby?
Sí. Pero en la clase yo tengo de todo. Gente que quiere bailar y gente que lo hace para sentirse bien no. Pero en la clase intento tratar a todo el mundo por igual. A las que realmente se dedica las empujo un poquito más o le pido un poco más. Pero si hay alguien por ejemplo que lo tiene por hobby y no le sale cosas entonces le digo que no pasa, tu tranquila, pero a la que realmente se dedica si le exijo un poco más, no? Pero en la clase intento de hacer sentir bien tanto una como la otra. Y la que lo tiene por hobby realmente me encanta tambien porque no todo el mundo se tiene porque dedicar a bailar flamenco hasta ocho horas diaria. Y entonces lo que lo tiene por pasarlo bien a mi me encanta. Es otra forma. No hace falta que le haga tan perfecta. No hace falta que le suene tan bien. Es como para que disfruten. A la que se quiere dedicar es algo mas duro porque ya le tiene que salir las cosas como tienen que salir, no?
As a professional, how do you relate to those of us who are not so dedicated. Like in your class there are all kinds of people and you relate well to everyone. How? For example the people who are really dedicated and the people who do it as a hobby?
Yes. But in class I have everything. People who want to dance and people who do it to feel good. In class I try to treat everyone the same. To those who are really serious I push them a little more or I ask more of them. But if there is someone for example who does it as a hobby and things don’t work for them then I tell them to relax but to those who are really serious I ask more of them. But in class I try to make everyone feel good. And those who do it as a hobby I love also because not everyone has to dedicate to dancing flamenco up to eight hours a day. And so who does it for fun I love. It’s another way. They don’t have to be so perfect. It’s not necessary that it sound really good because they do it for fun. For those who are serious it’s more work because they need to do things the way they’re supposed to be done.

Siguiriyas
¿Cuál es palo que más te gusta bailar y cuál más te cuesta bailar? Pues lo que más me gusta es la siguiriya y el que más me cuesta es la siguiriya.
What style do you most like to dance and what style is the hardest for you to dance? The one I like the most is the siguiriya and the one that is the hardest for me is the siguiriya.
On being "famous"
Tú eres muy famosa. Cuando la gente te ve andando por la calle, cómo quieres que te traten? De la forma más natural posible. Si me conocen o si me quieren conocer, me da igual que vengan. Me da igual, de la forma más natural. Espontaniedad, vamos.
You are very famous. When people see you on the street, how do you like them to treat you? In the most natural way. If they know me or if they want to meet me, it's fine with me that they approach me. Whatever, in the most natural way. Spontaneity.
Encounters with a fan
Cuéntanos de la experiencia más rara que has tenido con alguien, un fan. Hmm. Déjame pensar. Pues mira, últimamente me ha pasado una cosa que, no es rara. No es rara, es algo que me dejó impresionada. Una chica rusa que vive en Austria. Desde que me vio en un cursillo en agosto. Desde este momento me ha seguido a todos los cursos que he dado. En Italia, en Jerez, en Alemania. Y estuve bailando en febrero en Madrid y cuando salí del camerino estaba ella y no me dijo ni que iba y, madre mia lo que pueda hacer alguien cuando te gusta realmente algo, no? Y vino sola para ver el espectáculo y esto me impresionó mucho.
Tell us about the strangest experience you've had with a fan. Hmm. Let me think. Recently something happened that isn't strange, but it left an impression on me. A Russian girl who lives in Austria came to a workshop in August, and from that moment she has followed me to all of the workshops I've given. In Italy, in Jerez, in Germany... And I was dancing in February in Madrid, and when I left the dressing room she was there. And she hadn't told me that she was going to be there. Wow, what someone can do when they really like something. She came by herself to see the show, and this really impressed me.
"I try to live day to day"
¿Cuáles son tus planes a largo plazo? La verdad no me gusta planificar mucho las cosas para nunca frustrarme la verdad. Intento vivir el día a día. Y a lo mejor de un mes... Pues si es algo más alla, pues seguir creyando y seguir haciendo. El siguiente reto realmente si me tengo que poner algúno es hacer otro espectáculo del mismo nivel de Perspectivas y de Baile de Palabra. Que tenga el mismo nivel y que intente mostrar otro Mercedes Ruíz. Que siempre es transformarse o es que no el siempre lo mismo es lo más difícil.
What are your long-term plans? The truth is I don't like to plan a lot so that I don't get frustrated. I try to live day by day. Maybe a month out... And for things beyond that, to keep creating and to keep doing. The next challenge truly is that I need to do another show on the same level as Perspectivas and Baile de Palabra. Something of the same level that seeks to display another Mercedes Ruíz. Transforming oneself, not always being the same, is the most challenging.
Dreams
¿Qué sueñas por las noches? Madre mía, de todo. Yo soy una persona que sueño muchisimo. De todo. Pero nunca nada, de todo siempre muy lioso porque mi cabeza siempre esta pensando, siempre esta a ver lo que voy a hacer, no sé qué, no sé cuánto, siempre cosas que no tienen sentido ningunas.
What do you dream of at night? Oh my gosh, everything. I am a person who dreams a lot. About everything. But meaningless, about everything and always very complicated because my mind is always going. It's always thinking about what I'm going to do, this and that, always things that make no sense whatsoever.
The unexplainable energy
De dónde viene tu energía? (Aparte del café del Porrón*) Que arte!!! Bueno creo que me sale de las ganas por enseñar, por bailar, por aprender.
Where do you get your energy? (Apart from the coffee from the Bar Porrón*) Que arte!!! Well, I think it comes from my excitement about teaching, dancing, learning.
*Bar Porrón is the bar near the studio where Mercedes gets her coffee.
