12 Count Marcaje Tutorial [Flamenco Dance Steps]
Here’s a flamenco step that combines marking with footwork.
Use it with any palo in the rhythm of 12.
Or use it as a technique exercise.
Ready to try it out?
I recommend approaching the step like this:
Learn the feet.
Learn the arms.
Put them together.
Add details (see notes below).
Practice with some music .
Some notes:
Drawing a design with the feet:
Open the feet to make a dibujo on the floor with the last few beats.
On the body:
Engage the muscles in your back to accent as you bring the arms down on the count of 12.
Engage the bank again to accent as you close the arms on the count of 3.
Toward the end of the step, stretch the right side of your torso so it’s as if you’re leaning down a bit.
Steps w/counts:
12 right planta (ball) forward
𝟭 (hold)
2 (hold)
3 right planta (ball) back
4 (hold)
5 (hold)
6 left planta
7 left tacón (heel)
& right talón (heel made by lifting the leg)
8 right planta
9 right tacón
& left talón
10 left planta
